Studying at Barkly International College herein (BIC) is your first step towards achieving English language proficiency. Our English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) are designed to enhance your English skills and communication abilities, guiding you on your path to success in Australia and to help you reach your English language proficiency goals.

At BIC ensure that you are correctly matched to the appropriate English proficiency level for you to acquire all the necessary skills for a smooth transition into certificate and diploma courses at BIC or other colleges if you wish.

All ELICOS applicants are required to complete an English Placement Test. Don’t be nervous or scared about the test! It is simply a tool to help us understand and properly asses your current level of English Proficiency. The results of this English placement test will help us determine the correct English level and class for you, ensuring you receive the support and best instruction needed to achieve your English language goals.

Test Components:

Listening Comprehension:
Listen to a series of audio clips and answer questions to demonstrate your understanding of spoken English. These clips will include conversations, announcements, and short lectures.

Reading Comprehension:
Read various passages and respond to questions that test your understanding of the content, vocabulary, and overall meaning. Passages will cover a range of topics and difficulty levels.

Grammar and Vocabulary:
Complete multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blank exercises to assess your knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary. This section will test your understanding of sentence structure, verb tenses, prepositions, and common expressions.

Writing:
Write a short essay or response to a prompt, demonstrating your ability to organize your thoughts, use appropriate vocabulary, and construct coherent sentences. Topics may include personal experiences, opinions, or descriptions.

Speaking:
Participate in a short interview or conversation with an instructor to evaluate your spoken English skills, including pronunciation, fluency, and ability to express ideas clearly. You may be asked to discuss your background, interests, or opinions on various topics.

In accordance with the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018, Standard 8, International students who have, or would ordinarily require, a student visa and who are enrolled in any ELICOS Course, must maintain Satisfactory Attendance.

Satisfactory attendance is defined as attending 80% or more of the total scheduled contact hours while enrolled in an ELICOS Course.

Attendance and active participation in classroom activities is critical to the learning and success of students. For ELICOS students, BIC will monitor student attendance and participation during each study period for reasons of support, such as to identify those who may be at risk of not meeting course progression resulting from low attendance. This enables BIC to assist students with strategies to achieve satisfactory course progress and attendance requirements.

ELICOS students who do not maintain satisfactory attendance are at risk of been reported to the Department of Home Affairs, in compliance with the National Code and the ESOS Framework.

ELICOS Students Course Progress Requirements
ELICOS student’s must maintain satisfactory course progress in accordance with Standard 8 of the National Code and Standard P4 of the ELICOS Standards 2018.

Satisfactory course progress is defined as where a student:
Has received an outcome of 60% or over for all required Competency tests throughout the week study term of that level of study.

Unsatisfactory course progress is defined as where a student:
has not passed their assigned level of the General English course after two (2) consecutive study periods.

BIC is required to monitor, record and assess overall course progress throughout the duration of the General English course for which each student is enrolled to help them achieve satisfactory course progress. BIC will intervene if a student is at risk of failing to achieve satisfactory course progress and offer support to assist them in returning to satisfactory course progress. Students who do not achieving satisfactory course progress after intervention without a evidenced based reason will be reported to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) via PRISMS,

Course description:

 

The aim of this course is to help students learn important English phrases, greetings. spelling and fundamental grammatical concepts. This course familiarizes students with expressing needs and wants in English, to give simple requests and to use questions in order to acquire new information especially in everyday use. It is designed to assist students with listening comprehension and speaking through skills and strategies including vocabulary appropriate conversations.

The Intermediate course takes knowledge and skills that can be demonstrated by learners at a Pre-intermediate level. and introduces more advanced concepts to build on this foundation. Upon completion of this course, learners will have developed skills and knowledge on the fundamental skills in English: Listening, speaking, reading, writing and pronunciation

Course description:

 

The International testing System (IELTS) is an international standardised test of English Language proficiency for non-native English Language speakers.

  • This IELTS course will equip you with essential skills and strategies needed to successfully undertake thetest with confidesce. This course will provide the necessary practice in all areas of the test: reading,writing, listening and speaking. It will focus on the skills and techniques required to successfully pass the test by helping you to familiarise with the various test formats and to build test taking strategies.

Participants will practice different language task-types througha variety of activities, lectures, role-play and assignments. Interactive practice activities are provided for extra practice on those skills and strategies on topics common for the IELTS such asthe environment, the arts, media, science and technology, health,enerpy, education, transport and urbanisation.
